Our Related Services
Speech-Language Therapy
Effective communication is a primary goal of all students who attend the Trellis School. Our team of speech-language pathologists provide services in multiple environments throughout a student’s school day. For instance, sessions can take place in the classroom and therapy room, in the natural environment, and on community outings. Speech services focus on receptive and expressive language, speech articulation, and pragmatic language.
An assistive technology (AT) evaluation takes place in collaboration with the local school system. Ongoing AT service is led by the speech-language pathologist, in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
Occupational Therapy
The primary focus of occupational therapy (OT) in the school setting is to facilitate students in accessing all of their learning opportunities at the most optimal level by supporting their sensory, fine motor, gross motor, visual motor, and self-care needs, as related to school-based tasks. Sessions take place within the student's classroom, in therapy rooms, in the natural environment, or on community outings.
Physical Therapy
The primary goal of physical therapy (PT) services at Trellis is to ensure that all students can physically and safely navigate the school environment. This includes participating in all classroom activities with optimal positioning and posture, as well as managing stairs, curbs, uneven surfaces, restrooms, the cafeteria, the playground, and buses. School- based PT can vary, according to a student’s individual needs, and can include teacher, parent, and instructor education, as well as modifying the learning environment to maximize participation through adaptive seating or postural orthoses. PT sessions occur on the playground and in the classroom, in hallways, in the OT gym, and in outdoor areas of the school.
Music Therapy
Music therapy is an established health profession in which clinical- and evidence-based music interventions are utilized to facilitate individualized, non-musical goals. At Trellis, music therapy is a dynamic program in which our music therapist supports a student’s IEP goals in the areas of academics, motor skills, and speech and language. Beginning with an assessment of a students’ strengths, needs, and responsiveness to the musical environment, our music therapist then makes a recommendation for services to the Trellis team.
Adaptive Physical Education
If specified on a student’s IEP, our team provides adaptive physical education (APE) services. Here, the physical education curriculum is modified to meet the needs of the student to help them more effectively access PE classes. In addition to offering APE as a related service, APE groups are provided programmatically to all students who attend the Trellis School to ensure optimal participation in movement and physical education.
